Official Axanar Podcast #39: Deconstructing Beyond

David Gerrold talks Star Trek Beyond.

Star Trek fans eagerly awaited the release of the newest film with a mix of excitement and concern. After such widespread disappointment surrounded Into Darkness, how would the franchise be honored and portrayed in the year of its fiftieth anniversary? An initial trailer featuring music by The Beastie Boys was met with much hostility, and a few plot leaks created controversy in the fan community.

In this episode of the official Axanar podcast, Alec Peters sits down with David Gerrold, author of the classic episodes "The Trouble With Tribbles" and "The Cloud Minders," to talk about their opinions of Star Trek Beyond, the revelation about Sulu's sexuality, and how the character stories changed between the TV show and the movies. They discuss upcoming show, Star Trek: Discovery, and how they feel Star Trek films should have smaller budgets.

Official Axanar Podcast #38: A Psychic Timeshare

The Making of the FASA Role Playing Game.

The story of Axanar was born of the role-playing game published by the FASA Corporation between 1982 and 1989. Many elements of the game have influenced later Star Trek, particularly John M. Ford’s supplement, The Klingons, published in 1983. But it was 1986’s Four Years War sourcebook and its companion campaign module “Return to Axanar” that would plant the seeds for the story of Prelude to Axanar and the film yet to come.

Is that material canon? To some it is, to others it is not. But it was licensed, and the amount of research that went into crafting it is incredible.

In this episode of the official Axanar podcast, hosts Robert Meyer Burnett and Alec Peters are joined by two of the creators: John Theisen and Stephen Fender. John is the original author of the FASA Four Years War supplement, and Stephen penned the four-part novel series. Get set for a fascinating story of the history behind content made for fans, by fans, fueled by passion.

But first, Rob and Alec recount the night of May 20, the Star Trek Beyond fan event, and a little something that JJ Abrams and Justin Lin said while up on stage.

Official Axanar Podcast #35: The Indiana Jones of Star Trek Fan Films

John Atkin Talks Yorktown: A Time to Heal.

In 1985, Stan Woo began production on a Star Trek fan film that starred none other than George Takei. Yes, even as the Original Series cast were in the midst of making feature films, Sulu took to the screen in a fan production. That project was Yorktown: A Time to Heal. The only problem was that the film was never finished. But as Spock said, there are always possibilities; and that’s where John Atkin comes in.

In this episode of the official Axanar podcast, hosts Robert Meyer Burnett and Alec Peters are joined by John to talk about his project to see Yorktown through to completion. John shares how he first learned about the fan film, why he decided to make sure it got completed, the progress being made, and much more.

In news, Rob and Alec bring you an update on the set production as they gather around the new Klingon war table, and also fill you in on the progress being made on visual effects.

Official Axanar Podcast #34: Taking a Nap in Garth’s Quarters

Shooting the Axanar Heroes Vignettes.

As a bridge to Axanar, Robert Meyer Burnett and Alec Peters paid a visit to the Star Trek New Voyages sets to shoot the “Heroes” vignettes together with James Cawley. It was an exciting production involving people from five different Star Trek fan films. And in this episode of the official Axanar podcast, Rob and Alec recount the experience, talk about how the vignettes tie into Axanar, and what it was like to work on that amazing reproduction of the Enterprise 1701.

In addition, we bring you an update on the Axanar set construction, costume design and development, Garth’s wraparound tunic, and debate the difference between Trekkie and Trekker.

Official Axanar Podcast #33: Gabbing with Gary Gra’HAM

Axanar creates connections to the Star Trek that we know and love, and does so in two directions. It bridges the gap between Enterprise and The Original Series, and does so through story, technology, and people. One familiar face is Ambassador Soval … and not just the character, but the man who brought him to life on Enterprise.

In this episode of the official Axanar podcast, hosts Robert Meyer Burnett and Alec Peters are joined by that man, Gary Graham, to discuss how he became involved in Axanar, how he got the role of Soval on Enterprise, and how crowdfunding is changing Hollywood. Gary also tells stories of how he first got into acting, what it was like to be a young actor in the 1980s, and even tells you the “correct” way to pronounce his last name.

In news, Rob and Alec are joined by the Goddess of Fulfillment, Diana Kingsbury, for an update on those Axanar perks and recent developments in the production process, and a recap of their visit to Salt Lake City Comic Con.

Official Axanar Podcast #32: What Makes a Great Star Trek Story?

Writing Axanar with Bill Hunt.

Axanar takes place during war time. Does that mean it isn’t a Star Trek story? Some fans believe that war is incompatible with the Star Trek vision; but a story set against conflict doesn’t have to be all about the fight.

In this episode of the official Axanar podcast, hosts Robert Meyer Burnett and Alec Peters are joined by Axanar co-writer Bill Hunt to discuss what makes a great tale, why characters are at the heart of any good script, and how they are opening up the  story. They also dig into the writing process, and do something else fans love to do: debate canon.

Official Axanar Podcast #29: The Price of Leadership

Richard Hatch.

To win a conflict like the Four Years War requires strong leadership, and on the Klingon side, that comes in the form of Supreme Commander Kharn. The old-school, TOS flavor that Kharn brings to Axanar, brilliantly delivered by Battlestar Galactica legend Richard Hatch, has Star Trek fans everywhere talking about how true-to-Trek Axanar is.

In this episode of the official Axanar podcast, hosts Robert Meyer Burnett and Alec Peters are joined by Richard to talk about the role, why Richard was attracted to the project, and what he hopes to bring to the story. The discussion goes beyond Axanar itself into the realm of why people fight, the toll that conflict takes on leaders, and even why he loves the most recent incarnation of Star Trek.

In our news segment, Alec and Rob also bring you an update on the Indiegogo campaign, the Blu-ray, and a recap of San Diego Comic-Con.

NOTE: There is an audio glitch around the 46-minute mark. It has been left in the show so as not to lose what Richard is explaining. Just think of it as podcasting at warp speed.

Official Axanar Podcast #25: Does Star Trek Have a Future?

David Gerrold talks Star Trek, the Hugo Awards, and more.

Rob calls him “legendary” … and he doesn’t like it. But let’s be honest; David Gerrold *is* legendary! Without him, Star Trek wouldn’t be the same. So it’s only fitting that the man who penned “The Trouble with Tribbles” all those years ago is part of Axanar today. If there’s great Star Trek being produced, you can bet David is nearby.

In this episode of the official Axanar podcast, hosts Robert Meyer Burnett and Alec Peters are joined by David to discuss a wide range of subjects including the controversy surrounding this year’s Hugo Awards, the state of America, the ins and outs of the publishing industry in 2015, and whether or not Star Trek has a future.

In our news segment, Alec and Rob talk Parsec Awards and film festival nominations, the hip-hop story behind Prelude to Axanar’s sound mix, deliver updates on the soundtrack and Blu-ray, and fill fans in on the departure of director Christian Gossett.

Official Axanar Podcast #24: The Yuri Gagarin of Star Trek Fan Films

James Cawley talks Star Trek, Phase II, and Axanar.

He’s the one who showed us all the way. Star Trek fan films and independent productions are flourishing today, but more than a decade ago James Cawley set forth as a true pioneer. Official Axanar Podcast #23: Taking the Movement Forward

PR, Kickstarter, and Building Community & Brand.

Axanar exists because of all of you, those who have supported the project through Kickstarter and other avenues. What began as a top-notch fan film has grown into a full-fledged independent production. It’s more than we ever originally imagined. In fact, as Arlo Guthrie said, you may think it’s a movement—and that’s what it is.

In this episode of the official Axanar podcast, hosts Robert Meyer Burnett and Alec Peters are joined by Mike Bawden, the marketing and PR pro who will be heading up the next Axanar Kickstarter, to talk about building community through supporters, being accountable to those who fund projects, and how continuity and collaboration are key to success.

In our news segment, Alec and Rob recount their experiences presenting Axanar at WonderCon in Anaheim.

Curtis Leseter, who brings his Babylon 5 experience to Axanar, explains how the sound stage is being built, while Dean Newberry of Propworx talks about transforming the warehouse into a full-fledged studio.

Official Axanar Podcast #18: He Gives Good Nacelle

Tobias Richter Talks Building Beautiful Starships.

Star Trek may be more about the ideas and the people, but incredible ships and visual effects tie it all together. And while modern technology theoretically gives anyone the power to create effects once possible only in a big Hollywood studio, computers are merely a tool. To create truly stunning and believable visuals requires a rare talent. Axanar has one of the best in the business in Tobias Richter, whose work is renowned not just here on Earth but in every corner of the Alpha Quadrant—and beyond.

In this episode of the official Axanar podcast, hosts Robert Meyer Burnett and Alec Peters are joined by Tobias to learn about his love of starships, how he came to be one of the genres leading designers, how he came to work on Axanar, his starship workflow, and what he has in store for us next.

Official Axanar Podcast #13: Changing Your Horizon

Set Design with John Iacovelli.

Axanar may look more like a large studio production than an independent one, but the incredible work we’ve seen has been done on an extremely limited budget. Bringing aboard talent that knows how to work within those constraints is part of the magic; and few know how to do this better than Emmy Award-winner John Iacovelli, series production designer on Babylon 5.

In this episode of the official Axanar podcast, Alec Peters and Christopher Jones are joined by John to find out how he came to sign on to the production, the challenges of and approaches to working with small budgets, what has influenced his approach to design, and his visions for Axanar.

In our news segment we get the latest on the search for the home of Ares Studios, Aaron Dembski-Bowden joining the team to write the novelization of Axanar, plans for a behind-the-scenes videocast by Alec and Robert Meyer Burnett, and Alec explains why the Star Trek branding is being removed from Axanar.

Official Axanar Podcast #12: Orchestral Flourishes

Composing the Music of Axanar with Alexander Bornstein.

The visual and sound design of Axanar is incredible, but without a full musical score the experience of The Four Years War would be quite different. Many great composers have guided the sound of Star Trek over the decades, each bringing their own unique flavor while at the same time maintaining a common, special feel that tells viewers as once that what they are hearing is Trek. With Axanar, that proud history continues with the talents of Alexander Bornstein.

In this episode of the official Star Trek: Axanar podcast, Alec Peters and Christopher Jones are joined by Alex to learn about his musical training, his time working under Bear McCreary, his approach to composing for Prelude to Axanar, the classical and film influences on his music, and his plans for the full Axanar film.

In our news segment we learn about the new warehouse space that may become Axanar Studios, the first design meeting with John Iacovelli, and more discussions on fleshing out the creative team that will bring the rest of the Axanar story to life.

Official Axanar Podcast #10: Where's My Stuff?

Perks Fulfillment with Diana Kingsbury.

We all donate to Axanar first and foremost to help create an amazing film. But let's be honest… those perks are pretty cool, too. From patches to programs, CDs to Blu-rays, Axanar isn't just a movie—it's a full-on Star Trek experience. Getting those goodies out to donors, however, is an even bigger task than you might think. And leading the charge is none other than Diana Kingsbury, Fulfillment Director.

In this episode of the official Star Trek: Axanar podcast, Alec Peters and Christopher Jones are joined by Diana to talk about the process from donation to actual shipment of perks. Find out how Kickstarter collects the required information, how BackerKit plays into the process, and, of course, when your stuff will be heading your way!

In our news segment we get an update on the rewriting of the Axanar film script, an autograph party that featured a blossoming bromance between Richard and Gary, and some potentially exciting news for fans of Babylon 5.

Official Axanar Podcast #7: Making the Universe Larger

An Author's View of Axanar with James Swallow.

One of the most exciting parts of writing a story like Axanar is the opportunity to add richness to the Star Trek universe. This is something than few people know better than James Swallow, author of many novels including The Poisoned Chalice, part of the New York Times bestselling Star Trek series "The Fall." So how does a novelist view the story of The Four Years War and how Axanar is expanding upon events and characters that we've learned very little about in past Trek?

In this episode of the official Star Trek: Axanar podcast, Alec Peters and Christopher Jones are joined by James to get an author's view of the Axanar story, the way the Klingons are being portrayed, the backstory of Garth, and where the story might go next. Plus, James gives us a few teasers about his next two Star Trek books, included the Titan novel Sight Unseen.

In our news segment we recap the events of Salt Lake City Comic Con, discuss the first steps in pre-production of the full Axanar film, which kicked off on September 8 (the 48th anniversary of Star Trek), learn a bit more about Garrett Wang's Klingon role, get a post-Kickstarter update, and find out what kind of Axanar merchandise is in the pipeline.

Official Axanar Podcast #6: Tapes Have Gone the Way of the Dodo

Video Capture and Processing with Bing Bailey.

The tools used to capture and process video have changed drastically in recent years. Star Trek: Axanar would not have been feasible as a fan-supported independent production just a few years ago. But thanks to advances in camera technology, computer workstations and software, and drastic drops in prices, individuals with the skills can create Hollywood-quality films using the tools they have in their own homes and studios.

In this episode of the official Star Trek: Axanar podcast, Alec Peters and Christopher Jones are joined by video guru Bing Bailey, Digital Image Technician and Colorist for Axanar, to talk about the process of capturing, processing, and mastering video. We discuss the cameras used on Axanar, the hardware and software that Bing uses, and the steps required to master and create the final digital print that you see at a screening of the film.

In our news segment we recap the events of Dragon Con and Alec takes us through the final days of the Axanar Kickstarter, the amazing boost from George Takei, and the overwhelming support we've received from all of you, the fans!

Official Axanar Podcast #5: There Be Andorians Here!

Supporter Questions and Fundraising Ins-and-Outs.

The level of support being received by Star Trek: Axanar is unprecedented, not only financially but also in pure excitement and dedication. The premiere of Prelude to Axanar has kicked the warp factor up a few notches, and has also generated some great questions from fans and supporters.

In this episode of the official Star Trek: Axanar podcast, Alec Peters and Christopher Jones sit down to answer some of those questions and provide some background details about how the fundraising process works. Amongst the questions about creative that we dive into are the possibility of seeing Andorians and Tellarites in the full Axanar film, what format that film will take compared to Prelude, and whether or not we'll see the USS Kelvin. Plus, we learn the surprising design process behind the Vulcan patch that will be heading your way as supporters.

In our news segment we get an update on all the happenings from Axanar's trip to Houston Con, plans for the upcoming Dragon Con and Garrett Wang, and the status of the current Kickstarter, which is closing in on the final stretch goal.

Official Axanar Podcast #4: Putting the Puzzle Together

Editing Prelude to Axanar with Robert Meyer Burnett.

Even before Prelude to Axanar premiered at San Diego Comic Con, the trailer let fans know that this wasn't just another fan film. The writing, acting, sound design, visual effects, and directing all turned the collective head of fandom. But someone had to pull all those pieces together and assemble them into a two-and-half-minute package. That man is Robert Meyer Burnett, the same man who has dazzled fans with the documentaries and extras found on the TNG and Enterprise Blu-ray sets.

In this episode of official Star Trek: Axanar podcast we're joined by Rob who tells us the story of how he got involved in the project, how he condensed Prelude to Axanar into that final trailer (which was originally five minutes long!) and how working on Axanar differs from other projects he's been part of. As a bonus, we close out the discussion with the story behind the TNG single-disc Blu-ray releases like "The Best of Both Worlds" and why those exist.

In our news segment we recap Star Trek Las Vegas events and the screening of Prelude to Axanar, get an update on Kickstarter, find out more about Garrett Wang's upcoming life as a warrior, and get set to invade Houston Comic Con.

Official Axanar Podcast #3: Dispelling Disbelief

The Sound Design of Prelude to Axanar.

Spectacular visuals and captivating acting are two of the most noticeable elements of a film, but take away the sound and what are you left with? In the absence of sound effects, even the greatest story doesn't feel quite right. Weapons fire, starships zipping by, footsteps, and the gentle ambient hum of the engines are all critical to making the visuals believable. But how are they created? The sources of many sounds Star Trek fans find familiar may surprise you. In this episode of the official Star Trek: Axanar podcast we're joined by Mark Edward Lewis, Jesse Akins, and Academy Award-winner Frank Serafine to learn more about how they bring Axanar to life through sound.

In our news segment we get a first-hand account of the San Diego Comic-Con premiere of Prelude to Axanar, some of the behind-the-scenes excitement that led up to the screening, the launch of the Kickstarter for the full Axanar film, and Axanar activities on slate for Star Trek Las Vegas.

Official Axanar Podcast #2: Not Just Another Battle Story

The Axanar Story and Script with David Gerrold and Christian Gossett.

Set during the Four Years War between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, Axanar has its share of battles. But there's far more to the story than ship-to-ship combat, action, and explosions. At the heart of any good war story is the effect it has on those involved. War stories are character tales, and as famed Star Trek writer David Gerrold points out, this is what attracted him to Alec Peter's script. In this episode of the official Star Trek: Axanar podcast we're joined by David as well as director Christian Gossett to talk about conflict in Star Trek, Klingons, and why Axanar goes far beyond the average battle story.

Official Axanar Podcast #1: Vintage Garth and Researching the Four Years War

Background to Axanar with Alec Peters and Christian Gossett.

Star Trek: Axanar is the story of Garth of Izar, the legendary Starfleet captain who is Captain Kirk’s hero. Set twenty one years before the events of “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” this is the story of the victory that solidified the United Federation of Planets at a time when conflict with the Klingons threatened to tear the union apart. Garth's victory at the Battle of Axanar was the pivotal moment in the Four Years War.

In this, the premiere episode of the official podcast of Star Trek: Axanar, hosts Christopher Jones and Alec Peters are joined by Axanar director and renowned artist Christian Gossett, who also collaborated with Alec on the story. As an introduction, we discuss Alec's early interest in the character of Garth, the reason for choosing this particular setting and time period, and how Alec and Christian collaborated on researching and fleshing out this historic-yet-untold conflict.

We also bring you some updates on Axanar production, including the premiere of Prelude to Axanar at San Diego Comic-Con and some casting news of great interest to Voyager fans.
